UMW Volleyball Falls at CNU, 3-1, in CAC Volleyball Championship; Powers Becomes Career Kills Leader

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team fell at Christopher Newport University, 3-1, in the 2019 Capital Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday in Newport News, Va. The Eagles slip to 16-13 on the season. Senior Savannah Powers recorded 19 kills to become the school's all-time career leader in kills, with 1,328.

The Eagles started the match by claiming the first game, 25-21. After taking the first few points, UMW trailed for much of the first portion of the game, before a rally of seven of nine points gained the lead at 13-12. Junior Tenley Hares recorded three kills in the spurt. 

Following a pair of CNU points, the Eagles reeled off three straight, and never looked back in the game, as Powers scored four kills down the stretch en route to a four-point win.

The second game was a back-and-forth battle that saw niether team lead by more than three points, before the Captains rallied late to score six of the final eight points to take a 25-21 decision. In the third, the hosts used a six-point run midway through the proceedings to capture a 25-17 victory.

Once again in the fourth, the match remained tight throughout, with the Eagles fighting for a 13-10 lead midway through. CNU won four of the next five points to grab the lead, but the game was contested to the very end, as UMW cut the deficit to 22-21 before the hosts rallied to finish the match, 25-21.

Powers scored nine digs in addition to her 19 kills, and Hares scored 12 kills. Senior Peyton Dunow scored seven kills against one error. Junior setter Wren Berry recorded 40 assists and 12 digs, and senior Kendal Hall added 25 digs.

Powers and Dunow were named to the CAC All-Tournament Team.
