Savannah Powers Named CAC Volleyball Player of the Week

The Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) has announced its weekly awards following the final week of the 2019 women's volleyball regular season. Mary Washington senior outside hitter Savannah Powers earned CAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, while Christopher Newport senior middle blocker Riley Garrison claimed CAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Savannah Powers - Mary Washington

Mary Washington senior outside hitter Savannah Powers led Mary Washington to a pair of CAC road wins, registering 15 points in each. She scored 11 kills, four digs, and four solo blocks in a 3-0 win at York on Wednesday, and then posted 12 kills, two aces, five digs, and a pair of block assists at St. Mary's.


DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Riley Garrison - Christopher Newport

Christopher Newport senior middle blocker Riley Garrison helped Christopher Newport go 2-1 this week as she posted eight total blocks, seven of the solo variety, along with 31 kills on a .481 hitting percentage. On Friday vs. regionally ranked Salisbury, the Captains secured an undefeated CAC record as Garrison produced nine kills, hitting .389, with a solo block and a dig. She followed on Saturday against regionally ranked Virginia Wesleyan with 17 kills, hitting .500, with three solo blocks, one assisted block, and two digs. She ended the week with a blowout victory over Averett in which she added three solo blocks and five kills. This marks the second CAC honor for Garrison this season.

LEAGUE NOTES

Christopher Newport freshman setter Sammy Carroll helped CNU to a 2-1 week as she posted 112 assists (10.18/set) to go with 10 kills, eight aces (0.73), 24 digs (2.18), and two blocks. The Captains secured an undefeated CAC record against regionally-ranked Salisbury on Friday, and Carroll contributed 29 assists, three aces, two kills, seven digs, and two blocks (one solo). She followed on Saturday with a career-high 53 assists against regionally-ranked Virginia Wesleyan as she also added five kills, two aces, and 10 digs. She ended the week in a blowout victory over Averett with 30 assists, three kills, three aces, and seven digs...Kaely Rath led the Southern Virginia offense this past week as she collected 26 kills with a strong performance against Roanoke with 18 kills. She averaged 3.25 kills per set while hitting .254 for the week with an impressive .286 in a CAC matchup against St. Mary's (Md.). She added four total blocks at the Southern Virginia earn its 15th win of the regular season...Salisbury sophomore Amanda chew started all three matches for the Sea Gulls last week, combining for 36 total kills, including 21 in the win over Averett University on Saturday afternoon...Salisbury libero Hailey Dougherty started and played every set of the Sea Gulls' three matches last week, including a 3-2 win over Averett University on Saturday afternoon. The senior combined for 63 total digs....Kendal Hall registered 26 digs in a pair of road CAC wins for Mary Washington this week, against just three receiving errors. She scored 14 digs in a 3-0 win at York, with no errors, and then scored 12 digs in a 3-0 win at St. Mary's...
