UMW Volleyball Downs Lynchburg, 3-1, on Senior Day

The University of Mary Washington Volleyball team took down The University of Lynchburg, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.

Lynchburg came out in the first set gaining a 6-2 lead but after a timeout called by the Eagles, UMW came back with some points on the board after 2 kills by Senior Savannah Powers and an error by the Hornets to bring the score to 6-5. The Hornets were able to put their lead at 8-6 but a block by Powers and Freshmen Krista Rodgers followed by 2 aces by Powers gave the Eagles the lead for the first time in the set. After some errors by the Eagles, the Hornets reclaimed the lead at 14-10. After back and forth play, the Hornets brought the score to 24-15. UMW kept the game alive with 4-points in a row to close the gap to 24-21. Lynchburg was able to gain the 1-point needed to take the first set.  

The second set saw the Hornets take the lead at 3-1.  Sophomore Lexie Hendricks recorded a kill along with 2 errors by the Hornets to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead. Lynchburg quickly regained the lead but kills by Junior Tenley Hares and Rodgers brought the score to a tie at 7-7. The Eagles and Hornets would find themselves tied 6 more times until the Eagles were able to control the lead at 15-14 after a kill by Junior Wren Berry. Rodgers recorded 2 more kills while Powers and Dunow each recorded 1 to bring the score to 21-16. After a Lynchburg timeout, the Hornets were able to bring the score to 21-18 but the Eagles weren't finished. Dunow and Powers each recorded a kill with Dunow also collecting an ace to bring the score to 24-18. An attacking error on the Hornets closed the set and gave the Eagles set 2.

In the third set, the Eagles came out with 4 points in a row to gain an early lead. Lynchburg was able to put 2 points on the board but the Eagles fired back with a 5 point run with kills from Powers and Rodgers. The Hornets were able to gain 2 more points but again the Eagles took control of the court going on a 15-point run to take the third set 25-4.

The fourth set saw more back and forth action between the Eagles and the Hornets with an early tied score of 3-3. Powers led the Eagles to a 7-point run bringing the score to 12-4. Lynchburg was able to add a few more points to the board but UMW was able to maintain its strong lead after kills by Dunow and Powers for a 19-9 score. UMW brought the lead to 23-9 after a 4-point run. Junior Lexie Hendricks recorded a kill to bring the score to 24-11. Senior Kendall Hall put the fourth set away for the Eagles on an ace.

Powers and Dunow recorded 17 and 12 kills respectively. Rodgers had a hit percentage of .692 while Berry hit at .571 and dished out 42 assists. Hall recorded 17 digs this afternoon.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to York (Pa.) for a 7:00pm match.
