UMW Volleyball Sweeps SVU, 3-0, on Wednesday Evening

The University of Mary Washington Volleyball team swept SVU, 3-0, on Wednesday evening. The Eagles improve to 12-12 overall and 6-2 in CAC play.

In the first set, the Eagles got on the board with 3 points in a row with 2 coming from kills by Senior Peyton Dunow. The Knights were able to add points to the board but errors allowed the Eagles to strengthen the lead to 6-2. Senior Savannah Powers started a 4-point surge and after giving 2 points to the Knights, the Eagles continued with a kill from Junior Tenley Hares to start another 4-point stretch to bring the score to 16-6. The Knights were able to bring the score to 20-10 but two aces by Dunow allowed the Eagles to push the score to 22-10. Freshmen Krista Rodgers brought the game to 24-13 with a kill. UMW was then able to secure the first set on a kill by Hares.

During the second set, the Eagles and Knights saw a back and forth action with the score tied at 3-3. The Knights then gained the lead but a kill by Rodgers and ace by Powers allowed the Eagles to reclaim the lead. SVU was quick to respond and once again tied the score up 7-7. Hares responded with a kill to give the Eagles the lead and from there the Eagles maintained the lead. A service error on the Knights end led the Eagles on a 6-point run with 3 of those points coming from Dunow. SVU brought the score closer at 20-19 but Powers' kill and Sophomore Olivia Casey's 2 aces were able to lead the Eagles to gain the 5 points needed to end the set.

The third set saw the Knights and Eagles battle back and forth for the lead. Errors on the Knights end along with an ace by Powers and kill by Hares gave the Eagles a 10-7 lead. SVU was able to tie the set at 12-12 but 2 aces by Junior Wren Berry gave the lead back to UMW. After back and forth points, SVU gained the lead at 21-20. The Eagles answered with a kill from Powers, 2 kills from Dunow and an ace from freshmen Makenna Santinga, leaving the Eagles 1 point away from taking the set. An attacking error on SVU gave UMW the last point needed to close out and take the third and final set.

Dunow led the Eagles firing 13 kills followed by Powers with 12. Rodgers and Hares each recorded 5 kills each. Senior Kendall Hall led the team in digs with 12 while Berry dished out 33 assists.   

UMW will be back in action this Saturday, as the Eagles take on The University of Lynchburg for Senior Day at 1:00pm.
