UMW Volleyball Sweeps Catholic, 3-0, on Tuesday

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team swept Catholic University of America, 25-12, 25-18, 25-21 on Tuesday at Rosner Arena to improve to 4-5 this season.

The Eagles opened with a kill by Senior Savannah Powers and an error from the Cardinals. After some back and forth action, the Eagles went on a 9-point run to bring the score to 23-9. After an error on UMW, Catholic brought the score to 24-12 but couldn't catch the Eagles as Senior Peyton Dunow put the game away with a kill.

The Cardinals opened the second game on a 3-0 score but the Eagles were quick to regain the lead. Senior Kendall Hall led the Eagles to a 9-point stretch giving the Eagles a 17-9 lead. Catholic responded with a 5 point-run bringing the score to 21-15 but the Eagles were able to hold them off and secure the game with a kill by Sophomore Olivia Casey.

In the third, the Cardinals opened with a 2-0 lead but the Eagles were quick to tie the game at 3-3 and from there, take the lead. The Eagles found themselves 1-point from securing the win with an 18-24 score, when the Cardinals responded with a 3-point surge to bring the score to 24-21. Junior Tenley Hares put the game away on a kill from Senior Ellie Benning.

Freshman Krista Rodgers led the Eagles with 13 kills on a .480 hitting percentage. Hares had 11 kills and also recorded 6 digs. Junior Wren Berry led the team in assists with 35 and Hall registered 19 digs.

The Eagles will return to action this Friday when they travel to Selinsgrove, Pa. to take on Ithaca at 6:00pm and DeSales at 8:00pm.
