UMW Volleyball Downs McDaniel, 3-1, on Tuesday Evening

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team downed McDaniel College, 3-1, on Tuesday Evening in Westminster, MD. The Eagles improve to 2-3 on the season. 

In a tight first set, the two teams started out by trading points up to the 4-4 mark. After an attack error and a service ace by the Green Terror, the Eagles called a timeout. UMW kept the first set close as they were down just 9-8 after a kill by Krista Rodgers. McDaniel then scored the next three points to go ahead four, 12-8. After a service error by McDaniel, Lexie Hendricks and Aidan Finegan both recorded a kill to put UMW down 12-11. A service error by the Green Terror, tied the match at 13-13. The two teams kept the set close, but McDaniel took a three point advantage, 22-19. The Eagles pushed hard for the remainder of the set and tied it at 23. The Green Terror won the next two points to win the first set 25-23.

UMW got out a fast start in the second set as they went ahead 9-1. The Eagles recorded four kills during that stretch, including two from Savannah Powers. UMW maintained their lead after Tenley Hares had a kill to put them ahead 11-2. The Eagles went up 12, 17-5, on a kill from Peyton Dunow. Makenna Santinga recorded a service ace to keep UMW up 12, 19-7. The Eagles closed out the set, 25-10, thanks to a few errors from the Green Terror. 

The Eagles got out to another quick start in the third set as they took an 11-1 advantage. Kendal Hall went on a scoring run as she served 10 straight times and recorded a service ace. Hendricks, Powers, and Hares all had a kill to give the Eagles the big advantage. With the score at 16-6 in favor of the Eagles, Hendricks and Rodgers both put down kills. Santinga then recorded a service ace and the Eagles recorded two straight blocks to go up 20-6. McDaniel tried to make a run at the end of the set and cut the lead to 23-13. After an Eagles block, Hares then put down a kill to win the set 25-13.

In the fourth set, the two teams came out even after 12 points 6-6. UMW scored the next four points capped by a Dunow kill to take a 10-6 lead. After the Eagles held an 11-7 advantage, McDaniel won the next 5 points to take the lead 12-11. The Green Terror increased their lead and went up 17-14. The Eagles clawed their way back into the set and tied the match up at 24 a piece on a Hares kill. With Hall serving, the Eagles closed out the match as the Green Terror made two hitting errors to win 26-24.

Hares led the team with nine kills and Dunow chipped in seven. Hendricks and Rodgers both added six kills a piece. Wren Berry dished out 28 assists on the night. Hall had 22 digs for the Eagles.

UMW will be back in action on Friday as they host Washington & Lee in the UMW Classic at 7:30 p.m.
