UMW Volleyball Tops Eastern, 3-0, at Wid Guistler Invitational on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team defeated its third regionally-ranked opponent this week with a 3-0 victory over Eastern University on Saturday in Huntingdon, Pa. at Juniata College. The Eagles improve to 16-10 on the season. Game scores were 25-12, 25-16, 25-22.

In the first, the Eagles built an early 8-2 lead and never looked back in a 25-12 victory. Eastern grabbed a lead in game two, before five straight points gave UMW an 8-4 advantage. Junior Savannah Powers had three kills in the run. UMW widened the lead to five near the end, and scored the final five points for the 25-16 win.

The third game saw Eastern build an early lead, but UMW knotted the score, and the score remained tight until the Eagles rallied for six of seven points to grab a 19-14 lead. Senior Leslie Walters and sophomore Tenley Hares each had a pair of kills in the run. After Eastern scored five straight to tie the score, UMW settled down with a kill from junior Peyton Dunow, and reeled off six of the last eight points for the win.

Dunow turned in a nearly perfect day for the Eagles, with 18 kills against no errors in 21 attempts. Hares added 12 kills with two errors in 25 attempts, and Walters and Powers each added six kills. Sophomore Wren Berry had 35 assists, and Powers added four service aces. Senior Ryan Cho led UMW with 11 digs,and Powers added four block assists. UMW committed just nine errors for the entire match.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit St. Mary's College (Md.) in a Capital Athletic Conference match starting at 7 p.m.
