UMW Volleyball Falls at Washington & Lee, 3-0, on Tuesday Night

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team fell at Washington & Lee University, 3-0, on Tuesday night in Lexington, VA. The Eagles slip to 12-9 on the season.

The first set was very back-and-forth as it saw 12 ties and six lead changes. The Generals jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a kill and an ace. The Eagles tied the set up at four a piece on a service ace by Savannah Powers. UMW took their first lead of the match at 9-8 on a ball handling error by the Generals. Washington & Lee then won five straight points to take a 13-9 lead. The Eagles stayed tough and regained the lead 18-17 on an error by the Generals. The two teams battled over the last few points as nobody took more than a one point lead until the Generals scored two straight kills to win the set 26-24.

In the second set, both teams went side-out for 15 straight points and UMW held an 8-7 lead at that point. The Eagles ended that streak on a kill from Tenley Hares. The Generals came back and took a 12-11 lead on an attack error. From there, Washington & Lee went on a 10-2 run to gain control of the second set and take a 22-13 lead. The Generals took the second set 25-17.

An attack error by the Generals gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead to start the third set. Washington & Lee then reeled off eight straight points. Hares brought the Eagles within four, 9-5, on a kill assisted by Kendal Hall. The Generals then extended their lead to 10, 17-7, on an attack error. The Eagles scored four straight points with Powers serving near the end of the match but it was not enough as Washington & Lee took the third set 25-16.

Powers led the Eagles with 10 kills and Alana Harris contributed eight kills. Ryan Cho had 12 digs and Kendal Hall dished out 26 assists. 

UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they will travel to CAC foe Salisbury at 2 p.m.
