UMW Volleyball Sweeps Southern Virginia in Saturday CAC Action

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team swept Southern Virginia University, 25-14, 25-20, 25-13, on Saturday at Rosner Arena to improve to 10-8, and remain unbeaten in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles' hitting was on target from the start, as UMW connected for 12 kills in the first game, while committing just one error, in 21 chances. A pair of kills from junior Savannah Powers and senior Leslie Walters gave the Eagles a quick 3-0 lead in the first. An ace from senior Ryan Cho upped the advantage to 8-3, and a four-point run pushed the margin to 16-8. The Eagles finished the first game by scoring four of the last five points.

In the second, there were three lead changes early on, leading to a deadlock at 11-11. From there, UMW reeled off five straight points, including a pair of aces from freshman Alanah Harris. The Knights cut the deficit to three several times the rest of the game, but could get no closer, as the Eagles scored four of the final six points to grab a 2-0 advantage.

The third game saw UMW use a pair of runs to take a 12-6 lead. Another ppair of runs pushed the margin to 20-12, and the Eagles scored the last five points to take the game and match.

Walters led the Eagle charge with 11 kills against one error in 18 attempts (.556), while Harris scored seven kills in 16 attempts. Junior Kendal Hall had 26 assists and a pair of aces to go with nine digs, and junior Peyton Dunow had a team-high 13 digs, with Cho adding 10. 

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday when they visit Catholic University at 6:00 p.m.
