The University of Mary Washington volleyball team fell to Marymount, 3-1, on Wednesday evening in Arlington, VA. The Eagles are now 9-8 on the season.
In the first set, Marymount jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the game. UMW answered that hot start and scored the next four, two coming on kills from Alana Harris. Over the next several points, UMW grew their lead to 10-7 on a kill by Savannah Powers.The Saints went on a run to retake the lead 12-11 on a service ace. Marymount kept their momentum going and took a 19-17 lead. They closed out the first set by only allowing the Eagles to score two more points and won 25-19.
Again Marymount came out winning in the second set as they score the first four points. After trading points, the Saints found themselves up 9-4. UMW steadily cut into that lead and got the game to 15-14. The two teams battled the end of the second set out and Marymount was just three points away from closing out the set, 22-20. The Eagles made a comeback to win the second set, 25-23, on a couple of kills from Powers.
UMW dug themselves an early hole in the third set as the Saints got out to a 6-1 lead. Leslie Walters had a kill to put the Eagles within two points, 10-8. With the Eagles down 14-11, Kendal Hall went on a serving run that saw UMW seize the lead 17-14. Marymount tied the game up at 20 a piece and then scored five straight points to take set three, 25-20.
In set four, the two teams traded points in the early going and it was tied up at 6-6. The Saints took the lead 14-11 after a couple of kills. Marymount kept their foot on the pedal and grew their lead to 20-16. The Saints ended up taking the fourth set by a score of 25-19.
Walters led the way for the Eagles with 11 kills and contributed 17 digs to go along with three blocks. Powers scored 10 kills and 18 digs on the night. Harris powered her way to 10 kills and Ryan Cho had 21 digs. Hall dished out 22 assists and Wren Berry had 18.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday as they will host Southern Virginia at 2 p.m.
