UMW Volleyball Tops Kean, Falls to Muskingum at Carnegie Mellon Doubletree Invitational

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team defeated Kean University, 3-1, on Friday night at the Doubletree Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pa., hosted by Carnegie Mellon University. Game scores were 25-21, 25-18, 21-25, 25-21. The Eagles then fell to Muskingum University, 25-19, 25-18, 26-24, and move to 9-5 on the season.

In the first, the Eagles jumped ahead early, and mantained a lead throughout, leading by as many as seven points before taking a 25-21 win. In the second, the Eagles' hitting percentage reached an impressive .542, with 14 kills against just one team error, en route to a 25-18 win. Kean turned around its hitting averages the rest of the way, committing just two errors in the final two games, but UMW scored just enough to win the fourth in taking the victory.

Senior Leslie Walters and junior Savannah Powers each had 13 kills against four errors, while junior Peyton Dunow added nine kills against one error. Freshman Keri Gearhart added eight kills as well. The Eagle setters fared well, as sophomore Wren Berry scored 23 assists and four aces, while junior Kendal Hall added 19 assists and three aces. Senior Ryan Cho led with 11 digs, with Powers adding 10, and Gearhart posted three block assists.

UMW then played Muskingum University, dropping a three-game match. Walters had 10 kills and six digs, while freshman Aidan Finegan and Dunow each had seven kills. Hall and Berry each had 16 assists, while senior Ryan Cho added 16 digs. 

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday in Pittsburgh, against Mount Union at 1 p.m. and Carnegie Mellon at 5 p.m.
