UMW Volleyball Tops Va. Wesleyan, 3-1, on Wednesday Night in Home Opener

Senior hitter Leslie Walters scored 13 kills and junior Peyton Dunow added 13 to lead the University of Mary Washington volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday night at Ron Rosner Arena in the Eagles' home opener. Game scores were 25-14, 18-25, 25-10, 25-23; the Eagles improve to 5-1 on the season.

The Eagles got off to a strong start, notching a .240 hitting average in the first game while limiting the Marlins to six kills and nine errors en route to a 25-14 win in game one. VWU responded strongly with a comeback win in game two, 25-18, to knot the score, but UMW closed out the match by hitting .464 in the third game and .220 in the fourth.

UMW was led by Walters, who had 13 kills against two errors in 31 attempts, and Dunow, who scored 13 kills against four errors in 29 attempts. Freshman Alana Harris added nine kills in 17 attempts, and junior Savannah Powers scored eight.

Sophomore Wren Berry posted 27 assists while junior Kendal Hall added 19, and senior Ryan Cho led with 24 digs.

The Eagles will be back in action again on Friday, when they host McDaniel College at 5 p.m.
