UMW Volleyball Tops Washington & Lee, 3-0, on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team won a hard-fought 3-0 victory over visiting Washington & Lee University on Saturday afternoon at Rosner Arena, claiming wins by 25-22, 30-28, 25-22 scores. The Eagles improve to 7-6 overall, while the Generals fall to 12-2.

In the first, neither team led by more than two points until the Eagles collected six of seven points to take a 21-17 advantage. Junior Leslie Walters scored a pair of kills in the run that would put UMW ahead to stay. The Generals cut the margin to 24-22, but sophomore Peyton Dunow provided the winning kill to give UMW a 25-22 win.

The second game saw UMW assume a 10-4 lead, with Walters gaining three kills, but, after a W&L timeout, the Generals responded to cut the deficit to 12-10. Washington and Lee continued to cut away at the deficit until tying the score at 16-16, and the teams traded points until a 21-21 tie. The visitors scored two straight to take a 23-21 lead, their first of the game, but a pair of Dunow kills tied the score at 23. The teams continued to trade points until the score stood at 28-28. After an attack error gave UMW the lead, sophomore Savannah Powers provided the capper to give UMW a 30-28 win.

In the third, Dunow stole the show, unofficially scoring 10 kills. With the Generals leading, 11-9, four Dunow points and an attack error led to a 13-12 Eagle advantage. The Eagles built a 21-16 lead, thanks to two more kills from Dunow and another from Powers, and the Eagles held on for the 25-22 victory for the match.

Dunow led the Eagles with 17 kills and 16 digs, while Powers added 12 kills and Walters 11 with just one error. Freshman Wren Berry scored 44 assists, and senior Jenna Yost added 13 digs.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday night when they host Marymount for the CAC opener at 7 p.m.
