The University of Mary Washington volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Friday at the UMW Invitational, dropping a 3-1 decision to Johns Hopkins before falling to Berry College, 3-0. The Eagles slip to 4-3 on the season.

The Eagles opened with a 28-26, 25-17, 19-25, 25-23 loss to Johns Hopkins. Sophomore Peyton Dunow led the way for the Eagles with 12 kills, while junior Leslie Walters had eight kills with no errors on 21 attempts. Sophomore Savannah Powers chipped in with nine kills. Freshman Wren Berry contributed 30 assists, senior Jenna Yost posted 13 digs, and junior Ryan Cho added 12 digs with three service aces. The Eagles had 38 kills against 14 errors, 36 assists, 54 digs, and 10 service aces.

In the match against Berry, the Eagles fell by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-23. In the first game, The Eagles grabbed the first two points before Berry reeled off six of the next seven to grabe a 6-3 advantage. With the guests holding a 16-11 lead, the Eagles rebounded with four straight points, led by a kill from freshman Tenley Hares and three straight points with Dunow serving. With Berry leading, 20-17, the Vikings reeled off four straight points to get to game point, and held on for a 25-19 win.

In the second, Berry grabbed an 8-5 advantage before the Eagles took four straight points to take a 9-8 lead. An ace by Powers keyed the run. Freshman Brittney Dintaman provided a kill to up the Eagles' edge to 11-9, but Berry responded to advance the score to 13-12 by taking four of the next five points. UMW led, 19-17, after a Powers kill, but the Vikings answered with three straight to retake the lead. The Eagles gained a 21-20 lead on a Walters kill, but Berry closed the set with five of the last seven points in a 25-23 win.

In the third, UMW held a slim margin early, leading by as many as three, at 12-9. Berry then scored five of the next six points to grab a 14-13 edge. After trading several points, Berry took its first lead at 14-13. The Eagles fought back with two straight points, and the back and forth continued until the score stood at 22-21 with Berry leading. From there, the Vikings scored three of the last five to take the game and match.

Walters led the Eagles with 11 kills in 25 attempts with three errors, while Dunow scored nine kills in 30 attempts. Yost added 13 digs and Dunow registered 10, and freshman Wren Berry added 32 assists.

The Eagles will face Averett University at noon on Saturday as the event continues.
