The University of Mary Washington volleyball team defeated Cabrini University, 3-0, on Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament before 931 fans at the Ron Rosner Arena. Game scores were 25-12, 25-1, 25-14.

The Eagles started the match the way they finished their last match in the Capital Athletic Conference championship, connecting for a .545 hitting average in the first without an error in 33 attempts with 18 kills.

The Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 advantage to start the match, with two kills each from freshman Peyton Dunow and sophomore Leslie Walters. The Cavaliers kept the deficit near five until UMW scored five of six points to grab a 23-10 advantage. The teams traded points until a Skyler Sisk kill ended the first, 25-12.

In the second, the Eagles and Cavaliers battled tight through the early going, with the score standing tied at 6-6. UMW grabbed the lead with three straight points, and with a 10-8 lead, posted three straight to extend the margin to 13-8.

UMW led 18-13, then reeled off six straight points to take command. A kill and two aces from Dunow keyed the stretch run, with the Eagles finally claiming a 25-16 win.

In the third, Cabrini hung tight, and led 11-9, nearing the midway point. From there, the Eagles scored six straight, keyed by a pair of points from Dunow and Powers, to lead, 16-12. UMW ended the third by claiming nine of the final 10 points.

UMW was led by Powers, who scored 12 kills on 18 attempts to go with nine digs, and Dunow, who scored 11 kills, three aces, and three total blocks. Leslie Walters had eight kills and three block assists, and Rachel Hendricks added seven kills.

Mary Washington claims its first NCAA Tournament win since 1991, when the Eagles defeated Allegheny in the first round, 3-0. UMW will host Randolph-Macon College, a 3-1 winner over Stevenson on Friday, on Saturday in second round action starting at 5 p.m., following the first match of the day between Juniata College and Johns Hopkins University, which starts at 2:30 p.m.
