#14 UMW Volleyball Tops #18 CNU, Falls to #4 Southwestern (Tx.) on Friday Night

The 14th ranked University of Mary Washington volleyball team opened the evening with a classic five-game win over 18th ranked Christopher Newport University, then dropped a 3-1 decision to fourth-ranked Southwestern University on Friday night in Newport News, Va. The Eagles move to 22-2 on the season, and a perfect 5-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles opened the night with a thrilling 3-2 over the host Captains, winning the first two sets, 25-23, before falling in the next two, 26-24 and 25-14, before taking the fifth, 16-14.

Freshman Savannah Powers again led the Eagles with 16 kills and 11 digs, while freshman Peyton Dunow added 12 kills and seven digs. Freshman Skyler Sisk recorded nine kills and three block assists.

Senior Emma Olson had five kills against one error, with 44 assists, nine digs, and two block assists. Junior Jenna Yost had 18 digs to go with four assists. Sophomore Leslie Walters had seven kills, five block assists, and four digs.

In the nightcap, the Eagles came back to face fourth ranked Southwestern, and fell in four games, 25-19, 26-24, 21-25, 25-19. Junior Rachel Hendricks led the way with 15 kills and four block assists, while Dunow added 11 kills and nine digs. Olson scored 28 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore Ryan Cho scored six service aces and 14 digs.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday night when they visit Bridgewater College at 7 p.m.
