UMW Volleyball Tops #18 Mount Union, 3-1, for Program's First-Ever Win Against a Nationally-Ranked Opponent

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team kicked off day two of the ASICS/Juniata Classic in historic fashion, defeating 18th ranked Mount Union for the program's first-ever win over a nationally-ranked opponent. The Eagles won in four games, 26-24, 12-25, 25-19, 25-20.

Offensively, freshman Leslie Walters led the way with 20 kills, while the balanced attack saw Rachel Hendricks gain nine kills, and Dani Fiore and Emma Murphy each scoring eight. Junior setter Emma Olson had 44 assists, nine digs, and three service aces, while Jenna Yost added 26 digs.

In the hard-fought win in game one, the Eagles scored 15 kills for a .194 hitting average, but Mount Union answered with a dominant second game, hitting .423 and limiting the Eagles to seven kills. The Eagles stepped up in the decisive third and fourth set, limiting the Purple Raiders to 14 kills and 14 errors in the two games. UMW recorded 16 kills in the clinching game. Mount Union didn't see any player in double figures in kills.

The Eagles then faced sixth-ranked Juniata College, falling in four sets after taking the opener, 25-23, 15-25, 21-25, 14-25. In that match, Walters had 15 kills to lead UMW, while Murphy added nine kills.

Olson scored 34 assists, while Yost had 17 digs, and Caroline Porco added eight digs.

Mary Washington (7-3 on the season) will host Catholic University on Wednesday at the Anderosn Center at 7:00 p.m.
