UMW Volleyball Tops Meredith, Susquehanna to Run Win Streak to Four

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team defeated Meredith University, 3-0, and Susquehanna University, 3-1, on Saturday at the Captains Classic in Newport News, Va. The Eagles improve to 4-1 on the season, and run their win streak to four. Junior Emma Olson and senior Emma Murphy were named to the all-tournament team.

The Eagles topped Meredith, 3-0, with game scores of 25-16, 25-17, 25-16. Freshman Leslie Walters led the Eagles with 14 kills in 31 attempts for a .323 hitting average, while sophomores Rachel Hendricks and Dani Fiore each had seven kills.

Junior Emma Olson added 25 assists, while senior Emma Murphy scored three service aces. Sophomore Jenna Yost posted 12 digs, while senior Megan Payne had two solo blocks and four block assists.

The Eagles then took care of Susquehanna, 3-1, with game scores of 25-19, 25-16, 22-25, 25-15. Hendricks and Murphy led the way with 11 kills apiece, with Walters adding nine. Olson had 31 assists, while freshman Ryan Cho and Murphy each had four aces.

Yost had 21 digs, while Olson added 13. Payne had four solo blocks and three block assists.

"I was very pleased with the level of execution this weekend", said UMW head coach Matt Troy. "It was great to see such poise and confidence develop as the weekend went on. There is a lot of fight in this team and I can't wait to see how they continue to grow as the season progresses."

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., when they host North Carolina Wesleyan College.

Promotions: Wednesday's game will include a free postgame concert by Struan Shields and his band after the Eagles face the Battling Bishops.
