UMW Volleyball Tops Randolph-Macon for First Time Since 2005; Improves to 5-0

Freshmen Rachel Hendricks and Dani Fiore combined for 25 kills to lead the University of Mary Washington volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Randolph-Macon College for their first win over the Yellow Jackets since 2005. Game scores were 25-21, 16-25, 25-23, 25-22.

UMW fell behind in the first set, trailing 3-0 and then 14-11. The Eagles then reeled off seven straight points, led by a pair of aces from Caroline Porco, and led, 18-14. After the Yellow Jackets scored a pair to trim the deficit to 18-16, UMW then scored four straight, including a pair of kills from Kyla Foss, to lead, 22-16.The Eagles held on for the 25-21 win to take the set.

After falling 25-16 in the second, UMW reeled off the first four points in the third before RMC rallied to tie the score at 10. The set went back and forth with no more than a one point advantage either way before Randolph-Macon took a 23-22 lead. The Eagles scored three straight to take a 2-1 advantage.

In the fourth, Randolph-Macon led for much of the action, leading 10-6 at one point. The Eagles took their first lead at 20-19, and scored the final four points after the match was tied at 21 for the win.

"I was really proud of the way the team persevered when they fell behind", said head coach Matt Troy. "They really showed their heart and grit tonight. It truly was a team effort."

Hendricks led the Eagles with 13 kills, while Fiore added 12 kills. Emma Olson had 24 assists and four service aces, and Porco led with 20 digs.

The Eagles will host the UMW Invitational on Friday and Saturday, with the Eagles facing Lynchburg College on Friday at noon.
