Balanced Effort Leads UMW Volleyball Past Albright and Baruch in 2014 Season Openers

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team defeated Albright College and Baruch University by 3-0 scores on the opening day of the DeSales University Invitational. The Eagles move to 2-0 on the season.

The Eagles topped Albright, 25-13, 25-15, 25-10. Freshman Rachel Hendricks led the attack with nine kills and one error in 17 attempts (.471), with six digs. Freshman Dani Fiore added eight kills with nine service aces, and junior Emma Murphy scored six kills and six aces.

Emma Olson had 22 assists, while Jenna Yost had a team-high eight digs. 

The Eagles downed Baruch, a 2013 NCAA Tournament team, 25-15, 25-13, 25-13. Hendricks again led the way with 14 kills on 25 attempts (.480), while Fiore scored nine kills with one error in 23 attempts (.348) with eight digs, and Lexi Brown added five kills without an error. Olson had 26 assists and three aces, while Yost added 10 digs.

"Tonight, we came out a little slow", said UMW head coach Matt Troy. "Our ball control was a little off. But once we found it, we played lights out. It is exciting to see our potential. Overall, we had a great team effort."

The Eagles will face DeSales on Saturday at noon.
