Eagles Soar on Senior Night Past Marymount (Va.), 3-1

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington women's volleyball team defeated Marymount (Va.) on Friday night, 3-1. The Eagles move to 15-9, 5-1 CAC on the year. Before the match, seniors Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) and Christine Tran (Oakton, Va./Oakton) were honored for their service to the University and the women's volleyball team.

In game one, the Eagles jumped out early to a 7-3 lead, and increased this advantage to 15-8, forcing the Saints to call a timeout. The Saints fought back to cut the Eagle lead to two, but the Eagles held on to win game one 25-23. 

Game two saw an opposite start for the Eagles. Marymount (Va.) jumped out to a 14-11 lead, before UMW cut into the lead. The Eagles worked all the way back to a 15-15 tie. From here, the game went back and forth, with each team exchanging points. The Saints jumped out ahead at 23-20, forcing an Eagle timeout. The Saints won two of the next three points to win game two, 25-21.

Game three saw a close, back and forth affair to start. Marymount (Va.) took a slim 18-16 lead forcing head coach Matt Troy to call a timeout. The Eagles worked their way back to tie it at 22, and a Saint timeout. two Eagle points later forced the Saints into another timeout in the crucial game three. The Eagles held on, and won 25-23.

Game four saw the Eagles take the lead early and not look back. UMW jumped ahead 11-7, and went on to win the game 25-20 and the match 3-1. 

Wickersham led the Eagles with 20 digs in the game. Kayla Crawford (Richmond, Va./Powhatan) led the team with 15 kills. Freshman Emma Olson (Oakton, Va./Oakton) added nine kills and 21 assists.

The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, October 30th. The team travels to Christopher Newport to take on the Captains starting at 7:00 p.m.
