Eagles Volleyball Cruises Past Southern Virginia, 3-0

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington women's volleyball team defeated Southern Virginia 3-0 on Wednesday. The Eagles got 12 kills from senior Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) and nine apiece from Alexis Cummings (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) and Kayla Crawford (Richmond, Va./Powhatan). The team improves to 12-8, 2-1 CAC on the year. 

In the opening game, the Eagles jumped out of the gates early. The Eagles got out to a 13-6 lead, which forced a Knight timeout. Southern Virginia fought back, cutting the lead to 17-12, and then to 22-18. UMW closed the game out with a mini 3-0 run to win game one 25-18. Cummings had five first game kills, while Wickersham and Crawford each had four.

Southern Virginia came out on top early in game two 4-1. The Eagles rallied back and lead 7-5. From there the team jumped out to a 14-8 lead forcing another Knight timeout. The Knights came back to be down 22-6, before UMW put it away 25-17.

The final game saw Mary Washington get out quick, at 6-1. Caroline Porco (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) had two straight service aces t increase the lead to 12-4. Southern Virginia forced a UMW timeout with the score at 12-8, and ultimately closed the gap to 18-15. The Eagles saw their lead dwindle to 23-20, but closed out late, winning 25-20 off of a Crawford kill. 

The Eagles got 12 kills from Wickersham, as well as nine from Cummings and Crawford. Emma Olson (Oakton, Va./Oakton) had four kills, along with 31 assists. Caroline Porco had 16 digs to go with three service aces. "We played as a unit today." senior Kaitlynn Wickersham said following the match. "We were more consistant and comfortable. We are maturing a lot, putting together back to back complete games." head coach Matt Troy said about his team. 

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, October 19th. The team hosts St. Mary's (Md.) with a match starting at 1:00 p.m. from the Anderson Center.
