Cummings' 19 Kills Leads UMW Past York (Pa.), 3-0

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington women's volleyball team defeated York (Pa.) 3-0 on Wednesday night. The Eagles recorded 42 kills in the contest, as well as five blocks to down the Spartans. The Eagles move to 9-5 and 1-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play this season.

In the opening stanza, the pace of play was fast as well as back and forth. Both teams made runs throughout the game, but it was the Eagles who made the final run late to win game one 25-23. Senior Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) had eight kills in the opening game. Cummings (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) had six in the opening frame. Freshman Emma Olson (Oakton, Va./Oakton) provided 13 assists as well.

Game two saw another back and forth start, with the score being tied 13-13. UMW went on a 7-1 run to force a Spartan timeout with the score at 20-14. UMW never looked back, and went on to win 25-18.

In the final frame, York (Pa.) came out strong taking an early 10-8 lead. Head coach Matt Troy was forced to take a timeout to stop the run. The Eagles bounced back after the timeout, only giving up five points the rest of the way, winning 25-15.

Cummings finished with 19 kills, while Wickersham ended up with 16. Olson chipped in 32 assists, with two kills. Freshman Kelsey Stanbro (New Kent, Va./New Kent) had four solo blocks in the contest. "We executed well and played our most complete game to date," Troy said after the game. "We moved Alexis from the inside to the outside and she played lights out today."

The Eagles return to action this Saturday, October 5th. The Eagles travel to Lynchburg, with a match beginning at 2:30 p.m.
