Olson Paces the Eagles in 3-0 Win Over N.C. Wesleyan

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington women's volleyball team took down the Battling Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan 3-0 on Tuesday. Freshman Emma Olson (Vienna, Va./Oakton) registered 14 kills in the win. The Eagles improve to 6-3 on the year.

In game one, the Eagles took control from the opening serve. Mary Washington jumped out 6-0, causing a Battling Bishop timeout. The Eagles controlled play the rest of the way to win game one handily, 25-12.

Game two saw a see-saw battle of back and forth play. N.C. Wesleyan jumped out to a 2-0 lead, before the Eagles answered back with two points of their own. The Battling Bishops took command of the game, getting out to a 16-10 lead, causing a UMW timeout. The lead increased to 19-14 before UMW battled back to a 20-19 advantage. The back and forth game ended with the Eagles winning three of the last four points to take game two 26-24. "We have a young team, this game taught them to keep their composure and sometimes you have to win from behind," head coach Matt Troy said about the see-saw second game.

The final stanza saw much of the same as the first. UMW exchanged points early with N.C. Wesleyan, before going on a run to take control. The Eagles jumped out to an 18-9 and never looked back, winning the game 25-12.

Olson finished with 14 kills along with 12 assists and three digs. "Someone had to step up today, and I guess it was my turn," Olson said about her performance after the game. "The team was refocused when I was in there today." Fellow freshman Sarah Weber (Midlothian, Va./James River) chipped in with eight kills, and senior Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) had seven in the contest. Courtney Guengerich (Herndon, Va./Herndon) had a game high 21 assists for the Eagles.

The team returns to action this weekend at the Worthington Classic at Gallaudet. The Eagles play Catholic at 4:00 p.m. and Whittier at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. They then play Messiah at 12:00 p.m. and again at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
