Women's Volleyball Picks Up Big Win Over Gallaudet, 3-0 on Thursday

Washington, D.C.-- The Mary Washington women's volleyball team picked up a huge win over Gallaudet on Thursday from the nation's capital. The win moves the Eagles to 4-3 on the season, including wins in their last two contests. "Tonight we played one of our best all around matches," head coach Matt Troy said after the match.

In the opening game, the Eagles used two runs of 6-0 and 5-0 to take an early lead. Gallaudet answered right back with a run of their own to cut the Eagle lead to 23-21 towards the end of the game. However, Mary Washington pulled away taking game one 25-23.

Game two saw the Eagles come out of the gates early, taking the first four points of the game to take an early 4-0 lead. The Bison answered quickly to tie the game at 6-6. UMW took a 13-9 lead midway through the frame, before Gallaudet used a mini 4-0 run to to make it 13 all. UMW took control and closed out game two, 25-19.

In a pivotal game three, the Eagles jumped out to a 10-4 lead, causing the Bison to call a timeout. Gallaudet cut into the lead to make it 12-11 after a 7-2 run. The game went back and forth, with each team exchanging points. UMW had the final run of the game closing out the match with a 25-22 third game victory.

Freshman Emma Olson (Vienna, Va./Oakton) paced the Eagles with eight kills. Sophomore Alexis Cummings (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) and freshman Sarah Weber (Midlothian, Va./James River) each chipped in six kills apiece. Our defense really stepped up and slowed down a very good Gallaudet team. "They average above a .200 hitting percentage and we were able to hold them to a .106." Coach Troy said about his team.

The Eagles return to action this Saturday, September 21st. The Eagles host Hood College from the Anderson Center starting at 1:00 p.m.
