Women's Volleyball Defeats Methodist, 3-0 on Saturday

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over visiting Methodist University on Saturday. Junior Kayla Crawford (Richmond, Va./Powhatan) led the Eagles with nine kills. 

In game one, the Eagles shot out of the gate, grabbing a 5-1 lead. Methodist then settled down and brought the game back to 18-18 late in the game, before UMW closed out the game. The Eagles went on a 7-0 run at the end of the game to win 25-18. 

Game two saw some of the same, with UMW starting out 6-4 before a 4-0 run by Methodist gave them an early 8-6 lead. The rest of the set was back and forth, with each team exchanging points, until UMW took control and won game two 25-17.

The final game saw Methodist come out of the break with a 4-1 advantage. The Eagles climbed back, with a 7-4 run to tie it up at 8-8. The rest of the game was back and forth, with each team excahnging the lead. The Eagles came out on top, 25-22 to close out the match. 

Crawford had nine kills for Mary Washington, while senior Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) provided eight kills and Emma Murphy (Midlothain, Va./Midlothian) chipped in seven for the winners. Courtney Guengerich (Herndon, Va./Herndon) led the Eagles with two service aces. "Other players stepped up today. We were more aggressive, which is something we talked about this week," head coach Matt Troy said after his team's victory today. 

The Eagles return to action on Thursday, September 19th. Mary Washington will travel to Gallaudet for a match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
