UMW Volleyball Wins Two of Three at Stevenson Invitational

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team won two of three matches at the Stevenson University Invitational on Saturday, topping Ursinus College 3-0 and Cairn College 3-1 before falling to host Stevenson in three sets. Senior Ellen Smethurst was named to the all-tournament team.

The Eagles opened the day by topping Ursinus College, 25-12, 26-24, 25-10. In that match, junior Kaitlynn Wickersham led UMW with 12 kills with just one error in 24 attempts, with 10 digs and one solo block. Sophomore Kayla Crawford added 11 kills in 20 attempts and added eight digs. Maggie Parrish had 20 assists and Courtney Guengerich added 16 assists and two aces.

UMW then defeated Cairn College, 20-25, 25-17, 25-20, 26-24. Crawford led UMW with 15 kills, while Wickersham added 12 kills and 13 digs, with seniors Laura Gomez and Ellen Smethurst adding nine and eight kills, respectively. Parrish scored 26 assists and three aces, while Guengerich had 22. 

The Eagles fell to Stevenson, 25-13, 25-16, 25-12. Wickersham had eight kills and 15 digs for UMW, while Christine Tran added 12 digs. Gomez had four kills and five total blocks in the match.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Frostburg State University in the Capital Athletic Conference opener at 7:00 p.m.
