UMW Volleyball Tops Southern VA, Lynchburg to Improve to 12-1
The University of Mary Washington volleyball team improved to 12-1 on the season with a pair of wins at Lynchburg College on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles topped Southern Virginia University in four games, 25-21, 22-25, 26-24, 25-19, and then beat Lynchburg, 27-25, 33-35, 23-25, 25-22, 15-9. The 12-1 start for the Eagles is their best start since starting 23-1 in 1991, when they finished 37-3.

In the win over Southern Virginia, senior setter Katie Shiflett had 45 assists, while Laura Gomez scored 10 kills, senior Tola Adebanjo had nine kills, and junior Ellen Smethurst had eight kills.

In the five-set win over the Hornets, Gomez had 20 kills and five block assists, Adebanjo had 16 kills and 13 digs, sophomore Kaitlyn Wickersham added 13 kills and 18 digs, and junior Ellen Smethurst had 10 kills and five block assists. Junior Karissa Herrick had four solo blocks and five block assists.

Mary Washington will visit Salisbury University in a battle of Capital Athletic Conference unbeatens on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
