UMW Volleyball Opens With Two Wins at EMU Invitational

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team opened the 2011 season with a pair of victories at the Eastern Mennonite University Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va., topping Mary Baldwin in three sets before beating Philadelphia Bible College in five. The Eagles move to 2-0 on the year.

In the win over Mary Baldwin (25-17, 25-13, 25-20), senior setter Katie Shiflett (Weyers Cave, Va., Fort Defiance) had nine digs and 22 assists, while Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va., Manchester) added eight digs and Tola Adebanjo (Overland Park, Ks., Blue Valley Northwest) had seven digs and six kills. Kayla Crawford (Richmond, Va., Powhatan) and Laura Gomez (Charlottesville, Va., Albemarle) each had four kills for the Eagles.

The Eagles then topped Philadelphia Bible in five, winning 25-20, 20-25, 25-17, 21-25, 15-9. Shiflett had 52 assists, seven kills, and 15 digs, while Adebanjo had 15 kills and 21 digs. Gomez posted 16 kills, while Karissa Herrick (Colts Neck, N.J., Colts Neck) and Wickersham each had eight kills. Christine Tran (Oakton, Va., Oakton) and Wickersham added 15 and 21 digs, respectively.

The Eagles will continue at the Eastern Mennonite event on Saturday.
