1995 Mary Washington College Volleyball Season in Review

For the second straight year, a relatively young Eagle squad finished 6-1 in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC). What made the '95 season special, however, was the team's 30-16 overall record, a big turnaround from an uncharacteristic 12-21 campaign of '94.

The 30-win season was the third in school history; the 30th victory was a decision over York in the CAC Tournament semifinals. MWC (the #2 seed) dropped a thrilling five-game decision to top-seeded Gallaudet in the CAC Finals.

Head coach Dee Conway welcomes back three starters, and the top blocker/hitter off the bench in '96. She also hopes to bring in a strong freshman class. Conway's main goal next fall...a second CAC Tournament title, after winning the inaugural championship in '91. To achieve that goal, MWC must continue "fundamental improvement," especially in overall offense.

The Eagles did rank second in the CAC in blocks (3.33/game) and attack percentage (.265) ,and third in service aces (2.50/game). Two-time First-Team All-CAC hitter Angie Long (Sr./Gainesville, VA) paced the conference in individual blocking for the second straight year. The First-Team All-State selection also led the Eagles in kills. Other top hitters were Second-Team All-CAC choice Katie Wallace (Fr./Richmond, VA), second in team kills and service aces.

Julie Bartlett (Jr./Montclair, VA), who led MWC in dig average and Katie Forthofer (Fr./ Arnold, MD; honorable-mention All-State), who paced the conference in kill percentage while ranking fourth in blocks. Setting up the offensive attack was sophomore setter Hilary Clark (Woodbridge, VA), who ranked second in the CAC in assists en route to Second-Team All-CAC and All-State honors. Clark, the MVP of the Lebanon Valley Tournament, also paced MWC in aces (fourth in the CAC). Defensive specialist Sarah Richardson (Fr./Poquoson, VA) and hitters Tammi Hinton (Fr./Staunton, VA) and Jenny Phillips (Fr./ Poquoson, VA) should improve with experience.
