1984 Mary Washington College Volleyball Season in Review

With seven winning seasons in the last eight years, Mary Washington College volleyball has become a proven success. But in 1984, the MWC Blue Tide team surpassed all expectations when they compiled a 26-14 dual match record, earned an invitation to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) regional tournament where they finished fourth, and reached as highly as 19th in the NCAA's national Division III rankings.

Behind the tournament's Most Valuable Player, Annemarie Bischof (Vienna, VA), the 1984 edition of Blue Tide volleyball won their own MWC Invitational for the first time, defeating nationally-ranked Western Maryland College in the process. Stephanie Poh (Martinsville, VA), Paige Wohlgemuth (Centereach, NY), and Sue Burry (Cheshire, CT) gave Bischof considerable help in the tourney. The threesome were selected to the All Tournament team.

MWC knocked off another nationally ranked opponent, St. Andrew's College, on their way to a fourth place finish in the North-South Volleyball Classic. Bischof, Brown, Burry, Kopcienski all return although seniors Poh and Wohlgemuth form a third of the starting lineup, three 1984 starters will return as juniors in 1985, hitters Burry, Jenny Kopcienski (Mt. Sinai, NY), and setter Beth Brown (Charlottesville, VA). A fourth, Bischof, will be a fourth year player and senior in the coming season.

MWC volleyball is .one of the most successful of Mary Washington College's 18 intercollegiate sports. The volleyballers seven winning seasons in the last eight years is a statistic unequalled by any Blue Tide team. The squad's 162 wins in their nine year history represents the most wins by any MWC team, no matter how old.
