UMW Women's Tennis Tops Carnegie Mellon, 5-3, to Advance to NCAA Quarterfinal

The University of Mary Washington women's tennis team won a tiebreaker at one doubles to go ahead, and captured three singles matches in defating Carnegie Mellon University, 5-3, in the third round of the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament on Sunday in Rocky Mount, N.C. The Eagles improve to 14-2 on the season, and will advance to the national quarterfinals on May 24 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The Eagles dropped the first point of the day, as CMU picked up a victory at two doubles, 8-6. Freshman Hana Kimmey and senior Rachel Cooper then gained an 8-3 victory at three doubles to tie the score, and sophomore Abby Moghtader and junior Lauren Quinn then scored an 8-7 (6) victory at one to give the Eagles the lead, and momentum heading into singles play.

The Tartans picked up the first two singles results with wins at four and two singles, but the Eagles roared back with wins from Quinn at three, 6-4, 6-0, Cooper at six, 6-4, 6-4, and Kimmey at five with the clincher, 6-3, 6-4.

The Eagles will face Kenyon College (10-0) on May 24 in the NCAA Quarterfinal round at 8:30 a.m.
