#15 UMW Women’s Tennis Downs St. Mary’s, 5-0, to Advance to CAC Semifinals; Defeats #23 W&L, 5-4, in Afternoon Match

The fifteenth-ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team downed St. Mary's College, 5-0, on Saturday morning to advance to the CAC semifinals. UMW then played a second match against Washington & Lee in the afternoon and won 5-4. The Eagles are now 18-4 overall. 

In the first match of the day against St. Mary's, the Eagles swept the doubles point comfortably only losing one game. Sophie Dixon and Olivia Moore secured the first win of the day by winning 8-0 at three doubles, then Rachel Summers and Lauren Quinn won at one doubles 8-0, and Claire Coleman and Danielle Mirabella won 8-1 at two doubles. 

In singles action, Mirabella picked up the first victory at four singles 6-0, 6-0. Dixon picked up the win at five singles 6-0, 6-0 to secure the victory for the Eagles. Rachel Cooper won 6-0, 6-0 at six singles. They called the match from there, but all of the Eagles were ahead a set in the rest of the singles matches. 

Against Washington & Lee, the Generals took two of the three doubles points. UMW got their lone doubles win at one doubles as Quinn and Summers won 8-2. 

Cooper knotted the match up at 2-2 as she won 6-2, 6-1 and then Coleman gave the Eagles a 3-2 advantage as she won 6-3, 6-1 at two singles. W&L tied the match at 3-3 as they took four singles. Summers won at one singles 6-3, 6-4 to take the lead back but the Generals won at five singles to tie the match at 4-4. Quinn clinched the match for UMW as she won at three singles 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday as they will host Southern Virginia at a time TBA.
