University of Mary Washington sophomore Rachel Summers fell in the first round of the ITA Oracle Cup in Rome, Ga., on Thursday morning. Summers fell to Claire Handa of Chicago, 6-4, 6-1. In the first set, the players traded breaks early, and Summers gained a double flip to take a 4-3 lead. Handa rebounded to take the first, 6-4, and then took the second. Summers will compete in the back draw on Friday against Brianna Hartman of Gustavus Adolphus College.
