UMW Women's Tennis Tops Westminster (Pa.), 5-0, in NCAA Tournament First Round

The 15th ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team defeated Westminster (Pa.) College, 5-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III women's tennis championship on Friday in Williamstown, Mass. The Eagles improve to 20-5, and will advance to second round action on Saturday against 10th ranked Carnegie Mellon University.

The Eagles swept through doubles play, with junior Kait Brogan and senior Taylor Diffley winning at one, 8-1, over Gabriele Eaborn and Sydney Sterner. Junior Caroline Mosberg and sophomore Danielle Mirabella were then victorious at three, 8-2, over Alex Marzouca and Patricia Pivaronas. Junior Ashley Barrow and freshman Rachel Summers completed the sweep at two, with an 8-3 win over Maraiah Turiano and Stephanie Homitz.

In singles, Summers gained UMW's fourth team point, with a 6-1, 6-0 win at three. Brogan then claimed the clinching point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at one singles.

The win gives the Eagles 20 wins for the second straight season. The Eagles will face Carnegie Mellon on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Williamstown in second round action. The Eagles fell to the Tartans, 5-4, in regular season action in Pittsburgh.
