UMW Women's Tennis Dominates 2016 All-CAC Team; Brogan Named Player of the Year

YORK, Pa. - Mary Washington sophomore Kait Brogan became the 17th player in UMW program history to earn CAC Player of the Year honors, headlining the 2016 All-CAC Women's Tennis team. CAC champion UMW and runner-up Christopher Newport combined to collect all but two of the all-star awards on this year's squad. Brogan, who helped the Eagles secure their 13th straight conference crown, is the 13th-straight Player of the Year winner for UMW. Throughout the 26-year history of the CAC, UMW has had the Player of the Year in all but two seasons.

Head coach Patrick Catullo continued another streak for the Eagles this spring, as he was selected by his peers as the Dr. Edward Hegmann CAC Coach of the Year for the 11th-straight season. The Coach of the Year award was named by the CAC Board of Directors to honor former UMW women's tennis coach and athletic director Dr. Edward Hegmann, who won eight CAC Coach of the Year awards and led the Eagles to three national championships and nine straight CAC championships after the league was formed in 1990 through his retirement as coach in 1999.

Brogan was first-team selection at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles after also nabbing first-team honors in 2015. Senior Shelby Harris, the 2015 CAC Player of the Year and Brogan's doubles partner, was a first-team singles (2nd singles) and doubles pick for the fourth-straight year in both categories.

Joining Brogan and Harris as both first-team singles and doubles All-CAC honorees were junior Taylor Diffley (3rd singles, 2nd doubles), sophomore Caroline Mosberg (4th singles, 3rd doubles), and senior Mackenzie Smith (5th singles, 2nd doubles). Senior Chrissy Gaul (6th singles) and freshman Sara Fioretti (3rd doubles) completed the top honorees for the Eagles. Gaul earned first-team singles recognition for the fourth-straight season, while Smith claimed first-team doubles honors for the fourth-straight year and first-team singles for the third time in a row. Mosberg was a repeat first-teamer in both singles and doubles for the Eagles.

Christopher Newport secured a quartet of second-team singles accolades at spots two through six, and also swept the second-team doubles honors. Sophomores Alexandra Drye (4th singles, 2nd doubles) and Isabelle Wessel (6th singles, 3rd doubles) led the way with singles and doubles awards. Sophomores Claire Dockrill (3rd singles) and Meili Konell (5th singles) were also second-team singles award winners. Wessel and Konell were repeat second-team singles selections.

In doubles, the CNU No. 1 team of junior Katie Carlson and sophomore McKinney Harwood were repeat second-teamers, while Drye also collected her second-straight all-conference doubles honor at the No. 2 position. Drye's partner at No. 2 was sophomore Emily Morgan, while the No. 3 tandem of sophomore Kate Huck and Wessel rounded out the second-team doubles sweep for the Captains.

Salisbury's Zoe Moffat was named the CAC Rookie of the Year and a first-team All-CAC selection at No. 2 singles. Moffat is the fourth Sea Gull to grab Rookie of the Year accolades, joining Erica Mitry (2004), Jillian Poppe (2010) and teammate Natalie Savage (2013). Savage also secured All-CAC honors for the Sea Gulls, earning second-team honors at No. 1 singles. This is the third career all-conference singles award for Savage, including first team honors in 2014.
