#19 UMW Women's Tennis Opens With 5-4 Win Over Division I Norfolk State

The 19th ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team defeated Division I Norfolk State University, 5-4, on Saturday at the UMW Indoor Tennis Center to open the season.

The Eagles started strong in doubles, winning all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead to singles. Shelby Harris and Kait Brogan won at one, 8-3, before Caroline Mosberg and Sara Fioretti won at three, 8-5. Mckenzie Smith and Taylor Diffley won at two, 8-6, to cap the sweep.

In singles, the top of the NSU lineup struck quickly, winning at one and two in straight sets, to cut the deficit to 3-2. Diffley then won in straight sets at five to cut the Eagles' need for wins down to one. After NSU captured the next two points to tie the score, Brogan claimed the clinching point in the third set with a 2-0 lead, gaining a win via retire for injury.

Mary Washington will return to action on February 18 when they visit Longwood University at 3:30 p.m.
