UMW Women's Tennis Sweeps All-CAC First Team Honors

UMW Women's Tennis Sweeps All-CAC First Team Honors

Some of the names change with graduation, but the success continues as Mary Washington's women's tennis team captured its 12th-straight conference championship and the Eagles swept the first-team All-CAC awards in both singles and doubles for the second-straight year.

Three-time Player of the Year Lindsay Raulston graduated, so junior Shelby Harris stepped into the No. 1 position for both singles and doubles, earning her third-straight first-team all-star award in both and being named the 2015 CAC Player of the Year. Harris brings the Player of the Year award to Fredericksburg, Va., for the 11th-straight year and 23rd time in the 25-year history of the CAC. She is the 16th Eagle to win the award at least once.

Joining Harris as both a first-team singles and doubles All-CAC honoree this year are classmates Chrissy Gaul (4th singles, 3rd doubles) and Mackenzie Smith (6th singles, 2nd doubles) along with freshmen Caroline Mosberg (3rd singles, 2nd doubles) and Kait Brogan (5th singles, 1st doubles). Senior Alexandra Ritter (2nd singles) and junior Alina Suyama (third doubles) completed the top 2015 All-CAC squads. Ritter, the 2012 CAC Rookie of the Year, completed her career as a four-time first-team singles all-star while Smith is a five-time first-team all-conference choice (two singles, three doubles) and Gaul is now a four-time All-CAC honoree, including three first-team singles awards. Suyama also earned her third-straight first-team doubles award.

Patrick Catullo, the architect of the UMW program that is perennially nationally-ranked, was selected by his peers as the Dr. Edward Hegmann CAC Coach of the Year award winner. It is the 10th-straight year Catullo was honored by his peers. He is one of three Eagle coaches to be honored by the CAC coaches, along with Hegmann (eight times from 1991 to 1999) and Cindy Vander Berg (three times from 2000 to 2004). The award was named by the CAC Board of Directors to honor former UMW women's tennis coach and retiring Athletic Director Dr. Edward Hegmann, who won eight CAC Coach of the Year awards and led the Eagles to three national championships and nine straight CAC championships after the league was formed in 1990 through his retirement as coach in 1999. He was named the NCAA Div. III National Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1999 and recently had the outdoor courts at the UMW Tennis Complex named in his honor.
