#19 UMW Women's Tennis Blanks Gwynedd Mercy, 5-0, in NCAA Tournament First Round on Friday

The 19th ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team defeated Gwynedd Mercy University, 5-0, on Friday at the Edward Hegmann Courts in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Eagles improve to 17-7 on the season, and will face #13 MIT on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the second round.

The Eagles started quickly on Friday, as Shelby Harris and Kait Brogan won at one doubles, 8-0, and Mackenzie Smith and Caroline Mosberg won at two, 8-0, before Alina Suyama and Chrissy Gaul won at three, 8-1.

In singles, The Eagles swept the first sets at every match before Harris won at one, 6-0, 6-1, and Smith won at five, 6-0, 6-0. Mosberg led, 6-0, 4-0; Gaul led at three, 6-0, 3-0, Brogan led, 6-0, 5-0; and Hannah Jabusch led at six, 6-1, 3-2, when the result was decided.

The Eagles will face MIT on Saturday at 2 p.m. MIT defeated Franciscan University, 5-0, in the morning match.
