#20 UMW Women's Tennis Tops #40 CNU, 8-1, in 2015 CAC Championship

The 20th ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in doubles, and defeated #40 Christopher Newport University, 8-1, on Sunday at the UMW Indoor Tennis Complex. The Eagles improve to 16-7 on the season, and claim their 12th straight conference title.

Unlike their regular season match, in which CNU held a lead after doubles, UMW started strongly, winning at one doubles, 8-3, and at two doubles, 8-4, before picking up a hard earned 8-6 decision at three.

Kait Brogan at five and Mackenzie Smith at six won in straight sets to clinch the title for the Eagles, as Smith won, 6-2, 6-0, and Brogan won, 6-1, 6-1, at five. Junior Shelby Harris won at one, 6-1, 6-4, before Alex Ritter won at two, 6-1, 6-3.

Junior Chrissy Gaul forced a third set superbreaker before falling, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7, at four, and freshman Caroline Mosberg won at three, 6-4, 6-4.

The Eagles improve to 16-7 on the season, and will advance to the NCAA Tournament in two weeks for the 31st time in program history. The CAC title is the program's 23rd in the 25 year history of the league.
