The University of Mary Washington women's tennis team saw several competitors advance through Saturday action at the ITA South/Southeast Regional Tournament on Saturday at the Battleground.
In singles, in the championship draw, UMW's Shelby Harris defeated Kaitlyn Pellegrino, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round, and then Shannon Herndon, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the second. She will compete in the round of 16 on Sunday. Also in the championship draw, Chrissy Gaul won her first round match against Roxy Alban, 6-4, 6-0, before falling in the second round, 6-1, 6-3, to third seed Sydney Lehman.
In the championship doubles flight, Hannah Jabusch and Mackenzie Smith won their first round match, 8-6, while Chrissy Gaul and Paige Weinberg won, 8-3. Second seeded Harris and Caroline Mosberg were upset in the first round, 8-3.
In the blue draws, Ashley Price fell in the quarterfinals, 5-7, 6-2, 10-5, after winning the first round, 6-1, 6-0. Alina Suyama also reached the quarters before falling, 6-3, 7-6. Freshman Kait Brogan will continue on Sunday after winning, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round and 6-0, 6-1, in the quarters of the blue four draw.
Brittany McBride will also advance to Sunday play, having won, 6-0, 6-1 in the first round, and 6-3, 6-0, in the quarters of the Blue Five draw. Michaela Dowd won, -6, 6-1, in the first round and 6-3, 6-0 in the quarters to advance in the Blue Six draw.
In doubles, Berri Flood and Dowd advanced to the quarters with an 8-3 win, while McBride and Price won, 8-0, in the Blue Two draw.
