Harris Leads Eagles at Blue and Gold Invitational

Annapolis, Md.-- The University of Mary Washington women's tennis team completed their fall season at the Blue and Gold Invitational this past weekend. Sophomore Shelby Harris (Newport News, Va./Hampton Rhodes Academy) advanced to the semifinals of the B Singles Flight to lead the Eagles. The invitational was comprised of Towson University, George Washington University, James Madison University, UMBC, Longwood University, Howard University and host Navy. UMW was the lone DIII team in the field. 

Harris started the weekend by defeating Mikaela Carlson of Navy in the round of 16, 8-6. She went on the earn a hard fought victory over Towson's Sophie Lesage 7-6 (1), 7-5. The run came to an end in the semifinals where she fell 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 to James Madison's Jacqueline Palmucci. 

In other singles action, Berri Flood (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) picked up a play-in win over George Washington's Brydie O'Connor in Flight C. Flood was an 8-4 winner. Alina Suyama (Oakton, Va./Oakton) also picked up a win in Flight D Singles. Suyama was an 8-4 winner over Allie Pavlansky of Navy. 

"The team fought hard and worked on their execution throughout the tournament. They gained a lot of experience from playing the Division I opponents," head coach Patrick Catullo said about the team this weekend. 

The Blue and Gold Invitational wrapped up the fall season for the Eagles.
