Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington women's tennis team competed in the opening day of the ITA South Atlantic Regional on Saturday.
Sophomore Shelby Harris (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) advanced to the round of 16 in the Championship Draw. Harris defeated Chelsea Mixson of Washington & Lee University 6-3, 6-4. She will face Jody Law of Johns Hopkins, who was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Kelsey Grice of Randolph-Macon. Earlier in the day she defeated Margaret Anne Smith of Carnegie Mellon, 6-3, 6-4.
Harris and doubles partner Lindsay Raulston (Franklin, Va./Southampton Academy) advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Championship Doubles draw. The duo defeated Alsion Henry and Patricia Verdezoto of Randolph College, 8-2. They turned around and beat Katie Gordon and Maria Hawkins of Bridgewater College, 8-0.
Berri Flood (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) downed Gloria Bowman of Sweet Briar College 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Blue 1 Singles.
The second day of the ITA South Atlantic Regional kicks off at 8:00 a.m. from the UMW Tennis Center.
