UMW Has Strong Showing at UMW Kickoff Classic

FredericksburgVa.-- The University of Mary Washington women's tennis team competed in its annual kickoff classic this past weekend. Several Eagles picked up wins, and advanced in the winners bracket of their flights. The tournament consisted of four singles flights and two doubles flights. 

In singles action, Flight 1 saw Sophomore Shelby Harris (Newport News, Va./Hampton RhodesAcademy) and senior Lindsay Raulston (FranklinVa./Southampton Academy) compete. Raulsonwon her first match over George Mason's Morgan Yang, 7-6(3), 6-2. Raulston fell in her next match 6-2, 6-1; but rebounded for a 6-1, 6-1 win over Meghan Buell in her final singles match.Harris lost her first match, but won her way through the backdraw defeating Maja Banas; 6-2. 6-4 and earning a walkover victory over Yang.

Both Alex Ritter (Virginia Beach, Va./Colonial) and Chrissy Gaul (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) lost their opening round matches in Flight 2. Gaul lost a hardfought 7-5, 6-7(4), 7-6(6) match to W&L's Claire CahillGaul won her next match 6-3, 6-1 before losing in the backdraw finals. Ritterlost her opening match 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

The third flight saw Mackenzie Smith (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) pick up a couple of wins. Smith knocked off GMU Olivia Lacey-Thompson 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-5 and then she won her consolation match over Mina Saygi two and two. Berri Flood (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) won her opening match 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4. Flood lost her next two matches.

The final singles flight saw Michaela Dowd (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) pick up two wins, including her opening match. Dowd knocked off DSU's Khorhar 7-5, 6-4 in the opener. Dowd would lose her next match but win the consolation match four and one over fellow teammate Alina Suyama(OaktonVa./OaktonSuyama won her opening match one and two.

In doubles, Ritter and Suyama lost their opening match but won their next match 8-4. Raulstonand Harris teamed up to win their opener 8-4. They would lost the next one, but win by walkoverin the consolation match. Smith and Gaul won two doubles matches in Flight 2. The duo defeatedCochrane and Miller from GMU 8-2. The tandem then downed Lacy-Thompson and Saygi by the same score.

The Eagles return to action this weekend when they compete in the ITA South Regional Tournament. The event will be held at the UMW Tennis Center, starting Saturday, September 21st at 8:00 a.m.
