UMW's Raulston Named CAC Player of the Year as All-CAC Teams Released: UMW Sweeps First Team Honors

YORK, Pa. - Junior Lindsay Raulston (Franklin, Va./Southampton Academy) became the third-consecutive Mary Washington player, and fifth in CAC history, to win the CAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Year award in consecutive years and led an Eagles’ sweep of first team all-star nods in both singles and doubles.

Raulston, who was the CAC Rookie of the Year in 2011 prior to winning the Player of the Year award in 2012 and 2013, also picked up her third-straight first-team all-star award after leading the Eagles to their 10th-straight championship and 21st title in the 23-year history of CAC women’s tennis.

Salisbury’s Natalie Savage (Port Murray, N.J./Warren Hills) was picked by the coaches as the CAC Rookie of the Year and led the second-place Sea Gulls to sweeping all 12 second-team all-star berths.  Savage is the third Salisbury player to win the award since it was added in 1994, joining Erica Mitry (2004) and teammate Jillian Poppe (2010) as CAC Rookie of the Year award winners.

Patrick Catullo, the archetict of the UMW program that is perennially nationally-ranked, was selected by his peers as the Dr. Edward Hegmann CAC Coach of the Year award winner.  It is the 10th-straight year Catullo was honored by his peers.  He is one of three Eagle coaches to be honored by his peers along with Hegmann (eight times from 1991 to 1999) and Cindy Vander Berg (three times from 2000 to 2004).

The award was named by the CAC Board of Directors to honor former UMW women’s tennis coach and retiring Athletic Director Dr. Edward Hegmann, who won eight CAC Coach of the Year awards and led the Eagles to three national championships and nine straight CAC championships after the league was formed in 1990 through his retirement as coach in 1999. He was named the NCAA Div. III National Coach of the Year in 1988 and1999.

Joining Raulston on both the All-CAC singles and doubles first teams are senior Casandra Bowman (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood), sophomore Alex Ritter (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) and freshman Shelby Harris (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads Academy).  Bowman is a three-time all-star in both singles and doubles while Ritter makes her second-straight All-CAC team appearance.

UMW freshmen teammates Chrissy Gaul (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) and Paige Weinberg (Milton, Ga./Riverwood International Charter) were named to the All-CAC first-team singles squad while classmates Alina Suyama (Oakton, Va./Oakton) and Mackenzie Smith (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) were first-team partners at No. 2 doubles.

Four of Savage’s five Salisbury teammates that were named to the 2013 All-CAC second team are previous all-conference honorees, including seniors Elaina Iosue (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and Victoria Handlin (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) along with sophomores Roxy Alban (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Katie Youlios (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills).

Iosue and Handlin were named to the All-CAC team for the third-straight year while Alban and Youlios are two-time all-stars.

Salisbury junior Jessica Babyak (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) is a first-time all-star, earning the recognition at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
