The 27th ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team put up a valiant effort but fell, 5-4, to eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament in Pittsburgh. The Eagles end their season at 20-5.
Unlike the teams' first meeting a month ago, in which the Tartans won, 8-1, this time, the Eagles went on the offensive, winning two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles. Lindsay Raulston and Shelby Harris won at one, 8-6, and Alex Ritter and Chrissy Gaul won, 8-5, at three.
In singles play, Raulston won at one, 6-4, 6-2, over All-American Katie Cecil, and Harris won at two, 6-4, 7-6. The Eagles fell at 3-6 singles for a one-point defeicit at the conclusion.
Raulston will advance to the NCAA singles tournament next weekend in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
