#27 UMW Women's Tennis Tops #16 Washington & Lee, 5-4, in NCAA Prep Match

The 27th ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team defeated #16 Washington & Lee University for the first time in head coach Patrick Catullo's tenure, 5-4, on Sunday in Lexington. UMW improves to 19-4 on the season entering next weekend's NCAA Tournament action.

The Eagles jumped ahead with wins from freshmen Alina Suyama and Mackenzie Smith at two doubles, 8-6, and from Alex Ritter and Chrissy Gaul at three, 8-1.

In singles play, the Eagles freshmen continued to shine, as the Eagles won at four, five, and six. Chrissy Gaul won at four, 6-1, 6-3; Smith won at five, 6-1, 6-4; and Berri Flood won at six, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The Eagles will return to action in the NCAA Division III Championships, which begin on Friday.
