UMW Women's Tennis Captures Victories in ITA Regional

The University of Mary Washington women's tennis team hosted and competed in the ITA Regional Championships at the Battleground from Saturday through Monday, with several top results. Heading the pack for the Eagles was sophomore Michelle Meadows (Virginia Beach, Va., Collegiate), who captured the consolation championship of the championship flight, topping Salisbury's Jackie Burr in the final, after posting wins over Jaclyn prter (8-2), Natalie Walten (8-0), Kelsey Johnson (8-3), and Ellen Berlinghof.

Also in the championship singles flight, seventh seeded Courtney Goimarac (Hudson, Ohio, Hudson) advanced to the round of 16 with wins over Berlinghof (6-0, 6-2) and Lauren Lukas (5-7, 6-2, 6-3). Other Eagles who gained singles wins were Katie Schafer (New Market, Md., Linganore) over Trelsie Sadler, 6-1, 6-1, and Casey Malcolm (Canandaigua, N.Y., Canandaigua Academy) over Allison Burkhardt, 6-3, 6-2.

In the blue one singles flight, Danielle Velardi (Branford, Conn., Branford) posted wins over Michelle Knight (6-1, 6-4) and Morgan Huff (6-2, 6-1), and in the blue two draw, Rachel Covington (Danville, Va., George Washington) downed Krista Damirgian, 6-1, 6-1. In the blue three draw, Katharine Yudkin (Richmond, Va., St. Gertrude) topped Molly Parks, 8-4.

In doubles, Goimarac and Schafer won a pair of matches, while Cassie Bowman and Malcolm, Jocelyn Lewis andMeadows, and Rachel Covington and Danielle Velardi each won matches as well.

The Eagles will compete at the Old Dominion Invitational next weekend.
