Ten UMW Women's Swimmers Named to VaSID All-State Teams

The University of Mary Washington women's swimming team has eight swimmers named to VaSID All-State teams. Senior Julia Geskey, junior Claudia Keller, and sophomore Grace Nicolai were all named first team All-State. Freshman Thalia Costanza, senior Kaylie Benson, junior Mary Zagrobelny, junior Grace Gartman, senior Sydney Hall and senior Erin Whitesell were named second team All-State. The relay teams of 200 relay, 200 medley relay, 400 relay, 400 medley relay, and 800 free relay were named second team All-State.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Washington and Lee University swept the major awards and two schools dominated first team selections as the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced the first-ever College Division Women's Swimming All-State Team.

W&L's Emily Hageboeck was the State Swimmer of the Year, while Generals freshman Sara Gaston took State Rookie of the Year honors and Kami Gardner was named State Coach of the Year.

Hageboeck was a CSCAA All-American in four events- the 100 breast, 200 breast, 400 IM and 400 medley relay. She was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Meet after setting new ODAC, meet and school records in all three of her individual events.

Gaston was a CSCAA All-American in the 200 free relay and the ODAC Rookie of the Year. She won the 200 back at ODACs while adding a runner-up finish in the 200 free and a third place performance in the 500 free.

Gardner led Washington and Lee to a 13th straight ODAC title and was named the conference Coach of the Year. Her squad finished the season ranked #17 nationally.

With one exception, the entire All-State first team was comprised of swimmers from Washington & Lee and Mary Washington.

W&L first team All-State selections included Claudia Barnett (free), Mattie Grant (free), Ali MacQueen (free/fly), Gaston (back), Laney Van Lenten (back), Hageboeck (breast), Laura Bruce (fly), Caroline Baber (IM) and all five relay squads.

Mary Washington was represented on the first team by Julia Geskey (free), Claudia Keller (free) and Grace Nicolai (IM). The Eagles also swept all five second team relay spots.

Lynchburg's Claire Galloway was named first team All-State at breaststroke.

VaSID names 44 All-State teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
