UMW Men's and Women's Swim Teams Extend Leads at CAC Championships

The University of Mary Washington men's and women's swim teams extended their leads at the 2019 Capital Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday evening in St. Mary's City, Md. The women extended their lead over second place York to 76 points, 640-564. The men extended their lead over York to 210.5 points, 650.5-440.

Saturday's finals commenced with freshman Grace Nicolai finishing first in the 400 yard individual medley, knocking more than seven seconds off her preliminary time, at 4:31.74. Julia Geskey finished third, Callie Dunham was fourth, Hailee Morse fifth, and Ingrid Dizon sixth, with Beth Kelly taking eighth as UMW took six of the top eight spots. In the 100 yard butterfly, Erin Whitesell took first place at 57.44, followed in second by Carley Vaughn and Kait Luncher in fourth.

Grace Gartman was the Eagles' top finisher in the 200 freestyle in fourth place, with Macey Lynch and Sydney Hall taking sixth and seventh. Mary Zagrobelny took third in the 100 breaststroke, with Megan Carney finishing fourth. Geskey finished second in the 100 backstroke at 59.16, with Taylor Mooney taking third and Beth Kelly seventh. Vaughn, Zagrobelny, Whitesell, and Geskey won the 400 yard individual medley at 3:55.85, nearly two seconds faster than their morning time.

On the men's side, Noah Carpenter took second in the 400 IM at 3:59.65, with Austin Farrar third, Bradley Torrington fifth, and Matt Whoriskey seventh. Senior Jeremy Robertson took first in the 100 yard butterfly at 50.28, and Thomas Leckrone took third, Joshua Duke sixth, and Gareth Mancini eighth. Kolin Hoffman was second in the 200 freestyle at 1:42.45, with Brian Harnish in third and Matthew Scott in fifth.

Jeffrey Leckrone took first in the 100 breaststroke at 55.02 after timing out at 54.89 in prelims. Mark Dye finished second, and Jonathan Brooks fourth. Matthew Curran finished first in the 100 backstroke at 51.86, with Mancini taking second and Luke Bergstrom fourth. The 400 medley relay of Curran, Jeffrey leckrone, Thomas Leckrone, and Robertson finished first at 3:22.90, more than 11 seconds better than their seed time.

The championships will conclude on Sunday.
